The Mechanism
Paper is mostly cellulose, which is quite stable, plus a second polymer called **lignin**, the stiff compound that makes wood rigid. Lignin is far more sensitive to oxidation than cellulose. When paper sits in air — especially with sunlight or UV — oxygen attacks the lignin, breaking bonds between its alcohol subunits and rearranging the fragments into new molecular structures called **chromophores** ("color-bearers"). These chromophores absorb blue light and reflect yellow-brown, so as more of them accumulate, the page visibly tans. This is why the story of a paper's yellowing is really a story of how it was made: cheap wood-pulp newsprint is full of lignin and yellows in years, while high-quality paper that has had the lignin chemically removed can stay white for centuries. The yellow isn't dirt settling on the page — it's the page itself chemically aging, one oxidized bond at a time.
Why It Matters
The surprising part is that yellowing is not just fading or dirt. It is a chemical change happening inside the paper itself. Lignin, which comes from wood, is much more easily oxidized than cellulose, so paper that still contains a lot of lignin changes color faster. Sunlight and UV speed the process by helping oxygen react with the paper, and the new chromophores that form absorb blue light and leave a yellow-brown look behind. That means the color of an old page can tell you something about how it was made, not just how long it has sat on a shelf.
Wait — That's Not Quite Right
A common mistake is to think old paper turns yellow because dust, smoke, or grime is building up on top of it. Dirt can make paper look dull, but the yellowing in many old books and newspapers is mostly the paper chemically changing from the inside. Another wrong idea is that all paper ages the same way. Paper made from wood pulp with lots of lignin yellows much faster than paper that has had most of its lignin removed.

The Experiment
Compare Paper Aging
Find two kinds of paper at home, if possible: a newspaper page or junk mail and a sheet of printer paper or a book page that is still fairly white. Look closely at their color, thickness, and feel. If you can, place them near a sunny window for several days, but do not leave them where they can overheat or get wet.
Check them again over time. The goal is not to force rapid yellowing, but to notice that some papers already start with more wood-based material and may show age differently. If you have an older book or newspaper, compare it with a newer one and look for the warm yellow-brown tint.
Write down which paper seems more likely to yellow first and why. The key idea is that paper is not all made the same way, so the materials inside it help decide how fast it changes color.
